Lord Callanan, former Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), officially opened new offices for smart energy technology business Chameleon Technology in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, advancing the company’s capabilities for the development, production and innovation of smart meter technology.
Chameleon Technology plays a leading role in the national smart meter rollout programme, a key part of the government’s Net Zero strategy, by supplying In-Home Displays (IHDs) to nine of the top 10 energy providers. Its IHDs connect to smart meters to help consumers accurately track both their energy use and costs with ease.
Chameleon Technology has been granted over £3.6million in government funding for additional innovation projects from the government, including the Green Home Finance Accelerator (GHFA) project. Chameleon Technology is set to develop a complete end-to-end solution that enables homeowners to more accurately measure their home’s energy efficiency, with the additional offer of a tailored loan product to meet their retrofit needs.
Smart meters are making the energy system cleaner, greener and more efficient. With 32.4 million in homes and small businesses around Great Britain, they are enabling people to use more renewable energy, reducing our reliance on imported fossil fuels and helping consumers manage their energy use to save money.[/vc_column_text]

As Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, Lord Callanan staunchly supported the smart meter rollout as an important step in delivering a future-ready, decarbonised energy network. He joined Chameleon Technology’s co-founder and former CEO Mike Woodhall for a tour of the new office space, which has been purpose-built to facilitate the company’s cutting-edge engineering projects in developing future smart technology to engage consumers with their energy and help them make smarter, simpler and greener energy decisions at home.
There was an opportunity to meet some of the engineers, followed by a presentation of a plaque to announce the opening of the new office space and short speeches.
Lord Callanan, Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance:
“We have already made good progress in rolling out smart meters, with more than 32 million now in homes and small businesses across Great Britain.
“Seeing how much energy they are using in pounds and pence is putting people in control of their use and helping them save money on their bills.
“Working closely with industry partners, we’re well on our way to a more efficient energy system. I was delighted to open Chameleon Technology’s new Harrogate offices and meet the team helping us become a nation of smarter, cleaner energy consumers.”
Chameleon Technology recently announced that it has manufactured and delivered its 10 millionth in-home display (IHD), a record for the industry, supporting the government in achieving its 2050 Net Zero target by cutting carbon emissions through energy efficiency in the home. A Chameleon display is now present in one in every three UK homes, helping consumers to make low carbon and energy efficient choices through visible, transparent, real-time data. By the end of the smart meter rollout, two in every three homes are projected to have a Chameleon Technology IHD.
Chameleon Technology’s former CEO Mike Woodhall commented:
“Manufacturing and delivering 10 million IHDs to UK households is a milestone to be proud of. Continued uptake of smart meters, alongside the real-time data provided by IHDs, will help build a flexible, decarbonised and digitalised energy system, one that will benefit both the environment and consumers through lower energy bills. Smart meters and integrated IHDs are an integral part of our future energy system.”
