In a time when energy transition and environmental impact are global priorities, having accurate, timely, and meaningful data is critical. Chameleon’s mission reflects our commitment to innovation, integrity, and impact – turning raw data into actionable insights that shape a better future. That’s why we’re teaming up with some of the UK’s foremost energy experts and researchers at the Energy Demand Observatory and Laboratory (EDOL).
EDOL is a collaborative project between the University of Oxford and UCL. Its research team is undertaking crucial analysis of energy demand data to help create realistic solutions for the UK’s Net Zero goals.
A high resolution observatory for energy use in homes enables the teams at EDOL to understand how, why, and when modern domestic activity is impacting UK-wide energy demand, and its associated carbon emissions.
The new EDOL (SERL Plus) Observatory extends the existing SERL Observatory used by hundreds of researchers across the UK. This expansion is enabled by Chameleon Technology’s newest product, the Gateway Connect. It allows researchers to collect 10-second electricity data from a home’s smart meter, as well as indoor temperature and humidity data.
How the project works
Our versatile Gateway Connect connects wirelessly to the smart meter of participating homes, and transmits their live energy data to a Control Centre for the researchers to analyse. Households simply need to receive the Gateway Connect and plug it into a regular wall socket. The rest of the activation journey is done remotely, making it a hassle-free experience for them.
Over 1000 Gateway Connects have been connected so far, giving the EDOL team a huge amount of accurate, timely data to use.
Chameleon’s advanced algorithms can then break down patterns in energy use, helping researchers track current time-of-use trends, understand the effects of home thermal efficiency, model low-carbon technology usage, and much more.
“The Gateway Connect showcases the strength of Chameleon’s innovation. It brings together consumer-friendly hardware, data services and advanced analytics to deliver clarity from complexity,” says Kyle Brown, Chief Commercial Officer at Chameleon Technology.
“By transforming energy and environmental information into actionable insights, we’re not just supporting households today, we’re laying the foundation for a more sustainable energy future. This is about enabling lasting, positive change at scale.”

Simon Elam, EDOL Co-Lead and Director of the Smart Energy Research Lab (SERL) at UCL, agrees. “The new SERL Plus Observatory will enable a more detailed understanding of the drivers of energy consumption in British homes. It will positively impact scientific research, government policy, and innovation across the energy sector. The households participating in SERL Plus just have to plug in the Chameleon Gateway Connect so it is simple and easy for them. Meanwhile Chameleon’s data subscription service securely transfers data to UCL’s Data Safe Haven, where it is available to researchers in a secure lab environment.”
