Chameleon Technology’s response to NAO report on smart meter roll out

Chameleon Technology’s response to NAO report on smart meter roll out

In response to the NAO report on the smart meter roll out, Chameleon Technology, leader in designing and manufacturing smart in-home displays and provider of real time energy solutions, has stated it’s position as:

“The digitalisation of the energy market provides a better understanding of energy use, accurate bills and faster switching for customers. These are only the initial benefits of the smart meter roll out.

The long-term benefits to consumers and the environment will happen over the next decade, as we see further elements of the smart grid put into place – none of which will be possible without smart meters.

Customer access to personalised, real time energy data from smart meters is what underpins the transition and unlocks the benefits from such innovation in the industry.

The smart meter roll out is complex, but the sooner customers and businesses can benefit from this new technology, the sooner we will be able to create a more decentralised, decarbonised and democratised energy world which is fairer and more cost effective for all.

Report findings: the impact of smart meters from Smart energy outlook

Report findings: the impact of smart meters from Smart energy outlook

Smart Energy GB, the voice of the smart meter rollout, today publishes Smart energy outlook, the largest independent barometer of national public opinion on energy and smart meters. This latest edition of Smart energy outlook shows that over eight in ten (81 per cent) of people who have upgraded to a smart meter would recommend them to others.

Consistent with previous Smart energy outlook reports, the latest round of research shows that a large majority of people with smart meters are using the technology on a regular basis to keep their energy costs under control. Eighty two per cent of people with smart meters are taking steps to reduce their energy use.

Smart energy outlook also shows the importance of in-home displays (IHDs) in helping people get their gas and electricity under control. IHDs are handheld devices that show at a glance, in pounds and pence and in near real time, how much energy is being used. Every household is offered one, at no extra cost, when they get their smart meters from their suppliers.

The research shows that those who have IHDs are using them regularly to save energy. Eight out of ten people with an IHD check it regularly. Nearly nine in ten (88 per cent) of those with an IHD say that they have a better idea of what they’re spending on energy, compared to 76 per cent of those who have a smart meter but not an IHD.

Smart energy outlook is carried out for Smart Energy GB, twice a year, by independent research agency Populus. It surveys more than 10,000 people around the country.

Publication of Independent Each Home Counts Review

Publication of Independent Each Home Counts Review

Today the independent ‘Each Home Counts’, review into residential energy efficiency was published. The publication sets out a number of measures to provide confidence to consumers and increased business opportunities for the supply chain, including a new ‘single promise’ quality mark. The key objectives to establish an information Hub for consumers, plus the evolution of a data warehouse covering all UK homes, in combination with the higher quality of installation and advice is very much welcomed. The proposed measures will greatly assist the installation of an increased range of energy efficiency measures for consumers.

Dr Howard Porter, BEAMA CEO, and Each Homes Counts Implementation Board member, comments that “the future opportunities for consumers to reduce their energy bills, will be a combination of existing and well established measures, the smart metering roll out, and evolving technologies such as energy storage and electric vehicles. This review provides the framework for the industry to deliver these solutions to a wide range of consumers over the coming years.”
