This June, we reached a significant milestone in our journey to shape the future of home energy: the successful completion of the Chameleon Alternative Market for Energy Assessment (CAMEA) project – the most ambitious innovation project we’ve ever undertaken.

Funded by the government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, this 18-month programme set out to explore what the future of home energy management could look like. And with over 750 households participating, we not only tested new energy tariff ideas, but also the resilience, creativity, and collaborative spirit of our entire business.

The project formed part of the government’s Alternative Energy Markets Innovation Programme, which aimed to trial more flexible, consumer-centric energy offerings. Our response was the development and trial of the Energy Sure tariff through our consumer brand ivie – a fixed-rate, subscription-style energy tariff built around consumers’ homes, preferences and comfort levels.

From product design and consumer research to cloud infrastructure, data science, and app development, Energy Sure brought nearly every part of the business into the fold. It challenged us to think boldly and work fast, all while ensuring the customer experience remained at the heart of everything we delivered.

“Over the course of the project we saw really amazing collaboration efforts across marketing, operations, consumer research, as well as the ivie app, cloud, data science, and test development teams. I’ve been so proud of how we all pulled together. We were met with many challenges and managed to find solutions to ensure the project was a success.”

James Walker, Project Lead

We’re incredibly proud of the results – not just because of what we built, but how we built it. This project has reinforced our belief that innovation doesn’t happen in isolation. It takes coordinated effort, cross-functional alignment, and a shared vision for what’s possible.

Our work on Energy Sure also caught the attention of the media, with features in The Daily Express, Yahoo News UK, Current News, and Installer Online to name a few. That visibility helped shine a light on the importance of designing energy propositions that are not only technically feasible, but genuinely desirable and usable for real households.

While the trial has now officially concluded, the lessons learned – and the momentum created – will continue to guide us as we explore the future of energy data, smart tariffs, and personalised experiences. We’re grateful to all the participants who helped shape the trial, our brilliant trial partners, and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero for backing our bold thinking in this space.

This project marks a moment of pride for our team and our partners – but more importantly, it’s a signal of what’s to come. The energy transition demands fresh thinking, and we’re more committed than ever to bringing practical, scalable innovation to the market.
