The UK’s path to Net Zero is at a critical junction. While national targets are clear, meeting them depends on policy decisions led by industry expertise and live, real-world data and insights. Smart meter data, which shows detailed energy use across millions of homes, can be a powerful tool to help shape future-proofed energy policies and drive smarter decisions.

Future planning and guidelines need to be grounded in the reality of how people actually use energy, day in and day out, or we face an impossible objective.

Why real-world data matters

Smart meters give us real-time, detailed information about how households use energy. This data shows changing patterns of energy use, peak demand times, and where we can improve energy efficiency.

By using this data, businesses and energy experts can support government teams in creating policies that reflect real consumer behavior. That leads to smarter, fairer outcomes – with less guesswork and wastage of public funds.

Energy UK’s Future of Energy report highlights that the ‘availability of transparent data is key’ as smart systems and flexibility services grow. Open, well-handled data – that ensures customer privacy remains secure – lets industry, government, and researchers make the most of the smart energy system we’re building.

Data-driven policy

The UK’s goal to fully decarbonise its power system depends on understanding how people really use energy, and how they might in the future with more low-carbon technologies.

Smart meter data can help guide key decisions, such as the most impactful areas to focus on when upgrading infrastructure, how and when there’s a need to shift demand, or how to support the growth of renewables.

For example, understanding when peak energy use is highest can help local areas decide on the right size of battery storage or demand response schemes. This can stop over- or under-investing, saving time and money for both public and private sectors.

Smart meter data can also support social energy programs. If we know how vulnerable households use energy, we can help councils, housing groups, and policymakers better design things like social tariffs – ensuring help is directed to where it’s most needed.

A smarter energy grid = growth

Energy UK’s Clean Growth Gap reports stress how important private investment is to hitting the UK’s Net Zero targets. But investors need strong data to understand the risks and rewards. Smart meter data provides this foundation. It proves where efficiency and clean energy solutions are already working, and points to where new investment could help.

Our recent projects, with funding from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and supported by private businesses, show what’s possible when data, innovation, and collaboration come together.

This is more than just ‘better’ energy use. It’s a chance to rebuild the UK’s leadership in energy innovation, build jobs and energy security in one fell swoop. As Energy UK puts it, under its most ambitious forecasting the GDP of each area of the UK would be 5.4%-7.5% greater in 2050 than under the current trajectory. That’s a clean growth strategy that benefits everyone.
